What is Generative/Code) Art ?

Code art is basically any art that is created using computer code.

Generative Art draws inspiration from modern art, especially pop art that makes heavy use of orderly geometric patterns. It is a very broad and rich category of art created in code with a central characteristic - Generative Art incorporates a self-governed or autonomous system in some way.

Randomness is one type of autonomous system. By incorporating chance into a piece of code art, you get a different, completely unique piece of art each time you run your script, load your page, or respond to some user interaction.

The artwork becomes a collaboration between the computer and the artist. Some aspects of the artwork are controlled by the coder, but not all of them. The artist controls both the randomness and the order in the art. The coder-artist engages in a feedback loop where they are constantly tweaking a system to produce more desirable and often more surprising results.

This process embraces experimentation and happy accidents in a way that reshapes the role of the artist. As generative artists, we use the code basics like loops, control flow and specialized functions. We then blend them with often unpredictable forces, to produce completely unique results unlike anything else that exists.

Process.

All images are created using code, JavaScript (SvJs). I code in Visual Studio Code (VS Code) editor and no other software is used, so no AI, Photoshop, Illustrator or any other design/graphic application, just code.

The original images are created in the SVG format (Scalable Vector Graphics) which use mathematical algorithms to display images, these can be scaled to any size without negatively impacting their quality. For printing these are converted to a format the printer recognises, I use PNG (Portable Network Graphics) which are pixel based but feature high resolutions, lossless compression, transparency, and the ability to handle 16 million colours. This makes them an excellent choice for graphics and illustrations as well as very detailed photographs. (I use a browser extension for SVG to PNG conversion.)

Printing - Paper, Ink and Quality.

All prints are professionally produced by 'theprintspace' using Giclée printing (pronounced 'zhee clay' meaning 'squirt of liquid' in French) which create fine art prints of extreme high quality and longevity (11 inks CMYK model, 300 DPI (file), 1440 x 2880 DPI (printer)).

The paper used is Hahnemühle Photorag 308 gsm paper, 100% cotton, ISO 9706 conformity, museum quality for highest age resistance with an archival lifespan of up to 200 years (dependant on conditions), it gives muted blacks with even matt colour reproduction and excellent detail. The surface has minimal texture with a chalky smooth cotton feel which creates smooth colour gradients, It also has a delicate surface, so please take extra care when handling. Photorag is suitable for mounting but its cotton texture means edges can fray if not carefully handled.

The whole printing process is Carbon Neutral.

Sizes, Framing etc.

I try to offer a variety of sizes as i realise people have various budgets and limited free wall space but if you require a specific size not listed, please get in touch and I’ll see what can be done. Much of my work benefits from being viewed large but obviously by their nature larger prints are more expensive and the incremental cost rises with the print size. I appreciate not everybody has the wall space (or purchase price) to display large formats.

Framing - all ‘Square’ sizes (up to 100cm) should be relatively easy to find frames for and the ‘A’ sizes even more so, Ikea, Athena, Picture Frame Express (to name a few) offer a variety of prices, styles and sizes. Larger formats may benefit from or require bespoke framing.

Shipping & Refunds.

Shipping rates are obviously dependant on your location, this info is displayed/applied prior to checkout. All orders are printed on-demand, and despatched within 2-5 working days to anywhere within our Global market zones.

Product fulfilment is handled by 'creativehub' & 'theprintspace' and will be from the UK, Germany or USA which is determined by shipping destination, these locations should not face any additonal import/custom charges (if applicable).

We hope that you love your order and the quality of work that luckymothers produces but we understand that sometimes there may be issues, if there is a problem please contact us.

Obviously items lost or damaged in transit will be replaced free of charge.

US Customers & Tariffs.

You may be aware that in May (2025) President Trump eliminated the so-called “de minimis exemption” for goods coming out of China and Hong Kong into the US – this ‘exemption’ permitted shipments of goods worth $800 or less into the United States to be duty-free (no customs checks/fees or tax). The full global exemption was not set to come into force until July 2027; however, this initial deadline set by congress has been overridden.

From August 29th (2025) ALL global shipments of packages into the United States (incl. those valued under $800) will now be subject to import duties and tariffs, meaning every single package regardless of the value will face customs fees, tariffs and most likely some delays at the border. (N.B. This information is correct as of writing but God only knows if this is still the case - 06/08/2025)

However, this will not affect luckymothers customers ordering from the US as all our printing and shipping is handled by ‘theprintspace’ who (as well as having facilities in the UK and Germany) already print and ship within the USA (Brooklyn), so your orders will not be impacted and that means no customs, no delays, and no surprise charges.

Requests, Comissions etc.

If you have a specific request i.e. larger/smaller size, colour, want a retired image (if not limited) or commission please get in touch and I will do my upmost to accommodate.

I’m also interested in working with individuals, establishments, bars, boutique hotels etc. to create specific tailored one-of-a-kind generative artworks, unique works reflecting the individuality of the establishment.

1/1, Limited & Open Editions.

Open Edition prints are unlimited so can be printed indefinitely, no cap on numbers but as I create new works and the site is refreshed previous pieces will/may be retired at some point (I rarely create Open Editions.).

1/1 (One of One), these are one off prints and the only copy so no one else will own this image (an artists proof may be printed to check quality but will not be sold).

Limited Editions (a predetermined, restricted number of prints) will never be printed again once the number of iterations has sold out. Once these are gone, they are gone, limited editions by their nature are scarcer so obviously more collectable than open editions – only 100 people in the world (in a limited run of 100) will have your print as opposed to thousands when purchasing a similar priced 'open' print from a high street store (your neighbours may have your new ‘Ikea’ or ‘Next’ print in their own living room). Limited editions come with a signed certificate of authenticity listing edition number and run.

In some cases, different limited editions or collections may contain a variant of the same image. Multiple iterations of an image can be created by re-running or amending code, however each iteration will be unique as the composition, colour, shape, size etc. will change with each iteration. Each limited-edition collection or single print is individually created so while 'related' collections or individual pieces may be created no two will be exactly alike.

Mockups, Models (Colour) & Miscellaneous.

The room mock-ups should be used as a guide to perspective and to visualise what a print may look like in different frames, lighting and in different coloured, decorated and sized rooms or environments.

Occasionally, the colours (hue/tone) of the images you view may be slightly different to those of the actual physical print, this is as a result of monitors using the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) colour model, which is based on emitting light, while printers use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black), which is based on applying ink.

Monitors/screens generally have a wider colour gamut (range of colours they can display) than printers and this means they can display brighter, more vibrant colours that may not be possible to reproduce accurately with CMYK inks. The CMYK colour gamut can sometimes be more limited, particularly when it comes to highly saturated or bright colours, It’s also worth noting that the calibration/quality of your monitor or laptop screen will also have some bearing on the accurate colour reproduction of the physical print, however, discrepancies (if any) should be slight.
